PEORIA -- Two environmental groups have dropped their efforts to develop a compromise that would allow expansion of the hazardous waste landfill at Pottstown on the edge of Peoria.
The Heart of Illinois Sierra Club and Peoria Families Against Toxic Waste first proposed a compromise in February that would allow Peoria Disposal Co. to expand the landfill.
The Peoria County Board last May refused to site the expansion, but PDC has appealed that ruling to the Illinois Pollution Control Board. A decision is expected in June.
The compromise opened the door to negotiations between the groups, the county and PDC, as well as a rift between environmental activists who remain opposed to any expansion.
The final compromise proposal reportedly was not acceptable to the environmental groups, and on May 10 they renounced it. Members were to inform the Peoria County Board at its evening meeting on May 10.
The issue was not on the board's agenda for a vote, and county officials had promised a public meeting on any compromise before a vote.
