PEORIA -- Political action is heating up as the weather warms.

At an April 27 meeting, about two dozen activists met for training against fracking, in an event sponsored by Food and Water Watch Peoria, Peoria Families Against Toxic Waste, and Illinois Peoples Action.

Larry Jones of Food and Water Watch Peoria said the meeting starts the campaign against fracking in Illinois. His group has stopped water privatization in Chicago and managed to get a law enacted banning arsenic in chicken feed, he said. 

It's also working on legislation to label genetically modified salmon and corn.

Dawn Dannenbring of Illinois People's Action said that group worked to get drivers licenses for undocumented people, and is working on immigration reform and to regulate payday lending companies.   The group also wants corporations to pay their fair share of taxes, and to require transparency showing how much they are paying.

Here's a list of the group's forthcoming events in Peoria:

Wed. May 1:  Noon, a march for immigration reorm and prayer vigil for Congressman Aaron Schock, with a meetup at the parking lot of the First United Meethodist Church, 700 Main St.

Thus. May 2:  A day of action on fracking, with details announced later.

Sat. May 4:  8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m., a conference on fracking at the Universalist Unitarian church, 3000 W. Richwoods Blvd.  For details call the IPA office at 309/827-9625.

Wed. May 8: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Lobby Day and Day of Action in Springfield, call the IPA office for details.

The Central Illinois Healthy Community Alliance, continues its phase-out the Edwards coal-fired power plant campaign.

Its news release says: Join Central Illinois Healthy Community Alliance next Tuesday or Wednesday as we take important actions for our clean air and water campaign here in Central Illinois! 

 

We will meet and hear updates on the campaign, and reconnect on our next campaign steps. We will then take action together as we walk around Bartonville delivering information about the health hazards of the Edwards coal plant as well as publicizing an upcoming town hall that we'll be hosting in Bartonville.
