Just when we thought the denial of Permit No. 385 for the North Canton Mine had put this 6-year controversy to rest we learn it has come back to haunt us again!

What: IDNR Public Hearing for Renewal#1 to Permit No. 385
When: Wednesday, April 24 at 6 P.M.
Where: Donaldson Center, 250 South Ave D, Canton, IL

Why: Even though Permit No. 385 was denied last February, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is allowing Capital Resources Development Co. to apply for Renewal #1 to Permit No. 385. If you're wondering how a permit can be renewed after it has been denied, you're not alone. We're asking the same question!

The IDNR is proposing that Capital Resources redraw the boundary of the proposed strip mine in the Canton Lake watershed to exclude a headwater tributary to the West Branch Copperas Creek that would have been destroyed by the mine. It was the mischaracterization of this particular stream that caused the permit to be denied. On February 28th the IDNR held an informal hearing for this revision without a permit. They arrived with no permit or permit application to review, stating only that the permit renewal is expected to exclude the headwater tributary. This coming Wednesday IDNR is holding a formal hearing for Renewal #1 to a dead permit!
