PEORIA, IL --Two lovely arts events took place on Oct. 26, the Broadway musical Memphis and the Heartland Festival Orchestra's Viva Viola concert, featuring Haydn's Symphony No. 103 and viola player Max Mandel.
We saw both, the musical a matinee, followed by the evening concert.
They were very different, yet each was beautifully done.
Memphis is on tour and next plays on Oct. 29 in Springfield, IL. It's an outstanding musical, with skilled performances by the cast, who must act, sing and dance, and do it all extremely well.
It has a serious theme, race relations in the 1950s, enlivened by comedy and almost non-stop lively music. It has perfect settings, costumes, and all the elements that make musical theater so much fun.
Unlike opera and some musical theater, the music in Memphis is easy to follow, and not so difficult as to require prior familiarity.
The Heartland Festival Orchestra's concert was more subdued, sublime almost, with gentle string pieces flanking the Haydn symphony. Nice, sweet. Dessert after the big meal.
