Panel to Provide Peoria’s Perspective on 1963 March on
Washington and Peoria Civil Rights
On Saturday, February 15 at 2:00 p.m. at Peoria Public Library Main Library Auditorium, Pam Adams, Journal Star City reporter, will moderate a panel discussion on the August 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
Panelists will include Lorene King, Harry and Larry Williams, and other Peorians who traveled to Washington DC for the 1963 March. Byron DeHaan, who was chairman of the education committee of the Mayor of Peoria’s Commission on Human Relations at the time, will provide his insight into the civil rights environment in Peoria during the early 1960s.
The participants will discuss the events highlighted in the exhibit “Changing America: The Emancipation Proclamation 1863 and The March on Washington 1963. that is on display at Peoria Public Library Main Library through March 6 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
Changing America: The Emancipation Proclamation, 1863 and the March on Washington, 1963 is presented by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture and the National Museum of American History in collaboration with the American Library Association Public Programs Office. The tour of the traveling exhibition is made possible by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor.
