PEORIA, IL - From a news release: The Illinois State Historical Society presented its annual awards last week, and a Peoria group won a Superior Achievement award. Here are the details:
"It Changed Us! A Hometown Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of The Feminine Mystique, by Betty Friedan
Nominee: Betty Friedan Hometown Tribute Committee
Award: Superior Achievement
This special project nominated by the Peoria Historical Society, honored Betty Friedan, a native Peorian, "hometown Illinois girl," and a moving force in changing the world of consciousness and action for women and men. The Hometown Tribute Committee used the 50th anniversary of the publication of Friedan's book, The Feminine Mystique, to promote better understanding of Friedan in her birthplace and beyond. The event itself attracted several hundred people and allowed for women in attendance to present testimonials about how her book affected their lives. These testimonials are now being archived and posted on the Betty Friedan Hometown Tribute website.
(The website is hosted at the Bradley University website).
