PEORIA, IL -- From a news release:
Understanding “Fake News” with News Literacy Discussion Series
Peoria Public Library will host four community discussions, moderated by Dennis Anderson, Executive Editor of the Peoria Journal Star, on how we discern whether a news item is legitimate and how “fake news” influences society, in June and July.
These free discussions will take place Wednesday, June 28 at 6:00 p.m. at Peoria Public Library Lakeview Branch; Monday, July 10 at 6:00 p.m. at Peoria Public Library Lincoln Branch; Monday, July 17 at 6:00 p.m. at Peoria Public Library North Branch; and Saturday, July 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Peoria Public Library Main Library. All are open to the public.
The discussions, which are supported by a grant from the Illinois Humanities Council will also encourage participants to talk about how fake news influences civility and democracy in our society and how we can avoid being influenced by it.
Illinois Humanities is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Illinois General Assembly [through the Illinois Arts Council Agency], as well as by contributions from individuals, foundations and corporations. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed by speakers, program participants, or audiences do not necessarily reflect those of the NEH, Illinois Humanities, our partnering organizations or our funders. - 30 -
