Everyone: Here is an update on the Restoration Project
1. Yesterday, Wednesday, (April (24th, we (former 3rd Dist. City Councilwoman Gale Thetford, & current ICC Board President) and I (former 3rd Dist. City Councilman - the 3rd Dist. including Springdale Cemetery) were to 'Present the Project' to the City of Peoria Historic Preservation Commission, for approval of a 'Certificate of Appropriateness'.
2. The meeting was scheduled a month ago, our Application submitted about 45 days ago (thanks, profoundly, to our team member Bob Hoffer, our Landscape Architect Hank Stolz, and others, for dropping everything and getting it done).
3. Nothing happened at the.meeting.
4. No quorum present to vote, thus no presentation.
5. Some details:
a)?? meeting set at 8:30 am - thus I left home in Marshall County at 7 am
b) backing into a parking space just across the street from City Hall, I was immediately approached (before I got out of the car) by a fellow, among quite a few, wanting 'coffee money'. I was putting what few coins I had into the parking meter, only to find the meter broken. I considered backing into another space (plenty available), but opted to put a note on the meter saying it was broken.
c) Upon entering the 'Hall' I encountered a 'security entrance' similar to what the airport has.?? Empty my pockets, show my belt buckle, Marine 'dog tags' (which I do not remove), have cell phone inspected, asked by a fellow I knew, 'Mr Brown, do you have any guns or weapons "ya". 'Would you place it or them on the counter? "Uh, they are at my business, or at home." (stupid me, the humor was lost).
d) Feeling a bit like a Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court ... In the Heights, we have no 'meters' or an app on our phones to pay the meter coin fee on your credit card, no 'back in parking spaces', no 'security and magnetic pass-thru' or other such, uh, 'protocols', but I finally made my way to the 4th floor (Council Chambers).
e) And waited.
f) No quorum
5. Next 'Historic Preservation Commission' Meeting, NEXT MONTH, May 22.
6. Thus NO PROJECT GROUNDBREAKING ON MAY 4TH (as planned) ... Entire Project set back 30 days
The Good News;
1. I had on my left, as we waited, our Project Treasurer Gale Thetford ... ready to present.
2. I had on my right, Norm Kelly ...88 years old, IT WAS HIS BIRTHDAY YESTERDAY, recovering nicely from surgery about 6 weeks ago, and the guy who got this Project started.
3. Springdale Board(s) Member Jessica Young.
THEY made it to the meeting.
As you might guess, and sense, there is a little 'angst' here, considerably mitigated in the last 24 hours by some very special incidents, UPLIFTING in all cases. One very minor incident??? I got no parking ticket.
At this point, I would like to say this (this comm, voice-to-text, so 'say' is accurate);
I, we, Our Team ... et al ... are not upset, negative, 'wee'd off' or any other such nonsense.?? None of it. Snarky??? Just me, maybe a little or a lot.?? It is mitigated/passes by applying gentle perspective (a photographer's term).
Someone asked me, late yesterday, if we were 'OK to Soldier on'?
Get this everyone ... we are not in this Project to 'Soldier On'.
OK? Clear? Can ya hear me there at City Hall? Hope so.
The Project Mission is to 'Raise It Up' (the 'It' being fairly clear, I hope)
The 'Raise Phrase' in reference to a small group of Marines, February 23, 1945, making their way up a mountain trail, under fire, to 'Raise It Up' (the Flag of the United States of America), On The Mountaintop. Thank You, AP Photographer Joe Rosenthal, for taking 'The Picture', the Flag Raising on Iwo Jima.
We, our team, our supporters, those 'simpatico', are not a 'small group' but rather the Main Force.
We, our team, our supporters, those 'simpatico', are Re Dedicated To the Mission.
I could go on.
Instead, I will offer, word-for-word (I memorized it, no copy and paste here) the Invocation NAACP Vice President Sherry Carter-Allen delivered at our fundraising Dinner on Sunday, April 7th. (NAACP, one of the first local groups to Donate to this Project, we took in, Sunday, some 10,00000)
Please take a moment to read every single word.?? Past being a Invocation, IT IS PROPHECY.
"'Heavenly Father, as we gather this evening, we humbly ask you to fill our hearts and spirits with Thoughts and Commitment to COMMUNITY.?? Let COMMUNITY spread, tonight, from each one of us, to each table, to all those who gather here, and let COMMUNITY spread from this Restaurant, and engulf Central Illinois just as it did 153 years ago, when this 1866 Monument was Dedicated.
Heavenly Father, make us tonight, 'Wheels Within Wheels' ... radiating outward to others, and radiating inward to each other, that we may all Gather Strength and a Community of Commitment, from each other, to each other, to surround Central Illinois and beyond.
Bring Us Together.
Light our Path, Father ... Show Us The Way.
Let our Community Bond again, with 607 Peoria County Union Soldiers who sacrificed their lives for??Union and Community.
Let their Service and Sacrifice be Our Own.?
Let this Restoration Project Rise Above Stones, Father ... Let our bond with their Service and Sacrifice cause us to 'Take Up Wings, As In Eagles'.
Take us, tonight, Heavenly Father, To the Mountaintop.
Let us see what has been Lost and Forgotten, Be Found, and Come Home To Us Again.?
In Your Name, Father, we gather this evening.
In Your Service, Father, we Raise Again, a Monument to Union, Service, Sacrifice, and Community.
In Your Honor, Father... we join hands, we join Spirits, we Join In Community.
Amen."
So 'voice-to-text, here,' and apologies for length on a busy day/time for everyone.
It needed to be said, and Re-Affirmed.
I must say, it feels good to let it out, re-compose, re-focus, concentrate on the Subject and Composition, lighting and all, and 'shoot' (all photographer's lingo).
Thanks again, everyone ... Our Team Members ... Thetford, Hoffer, Bertino, Bagley, Kelly, Young, so many, many others ...
My Gosh.
With Respect, most humbly,??to my friends in the Army ... "Soldier On, My Ass".
