German Diplomat to Explore the State of Transatlantic Relations
A top German diplomat will discuss the status of U.S.-German relations when she speaks to a dinner meeting of the Peoria Area World Affairs Council.
Helga Barth, minister and head of political affairs at the Federal Republic of Germany’s Washington, D.C., embassy, will speak on Thursday, May 30 at an event co-sponsored by PAWAC and the German-American Central Society of Peoria. The event begins at 5 p.m. at The Lindenhof, 7601 Harker, Peoria. The public is invited.
An expert in German relations with the U.S., the Middle East and Asia, Barth will speak on “The State of Transatlantic Ties: The Importance of German-US Relations.” She is expected to discuss the impact of Brexit on the U.S., Germany and the European Union, and the economic, political and cultural ties that link Germany and the United States. She will share her thoughts on how central Illinois will be affected by the economic and political changes in Europe.
Germany is one of America’s largest trading partners, and Illinois is one of the most active states in selling and buying German goods. Large numbers of German immigrants started coming to central Illinois nearly 200 years ago and they continue to have a major impact on this area.
Prior to Minister Barth being posted in the U.S., she served as head of the Middle Eastern and Asian Affairs Division for German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Other diplomatic positions she’s held were as the foreign ministry’s research coordinator for policy planning; political counselor in Ankara, Turkey; deputy consul general in Guangzhou, China; and as a political officer at the German Embassy in Tokyo.
The event begins with a cocktail hour at 5 p.m. and dinner buffet at 5:30. Minister Barth’s remarks will be at 7 p.m. Tickets for the dinner and presentation are $35 per person. The Peoria Area World Affairs Council is a community-based volunteer organization that brings the world to Central Illinois by holding a variety of forums on international history, culture and current events.
