Sit in for voting, fair tax amendment

PEORIA, IL -- From a  news release:

Church Elders Sit-In to Bring Out the Vote and Support the Fair Tax for Illinois

Peoria, IL – Saturday, September 19, 2020 – Members of the Universalist Unitarian Church of Peoria will stage Elder Sit-Ins at the intersection of Main and University Streets on four Saturdays, from 12 noon to 1 pm, beginning September 19^th, to urge citizens to vote, and to vote ‘Yes’ on the Fair Tax for Illinois on November 3^rd.

“We are ‘voting our values’ – and want to empower fellow citizens to use their vote and to vote ‘yes’ for the Fair Tax amendment to our Illinois Constitution, a change in our tax system that will give tax relief to 97% of taxpayers, and most significantly, to those at the lowest income levels, helping their communities to thrive.” stated Jean Sloan, chair for the UU the Vote Committee at the Universalist Unitarian Church of Peoria. “We invite the elders of other Peoria faith communities to join us at University and Main to encourage everyone to have a plan to vote.”

The Universalist Unitarian Church of Peoria, founded in 1843, is one of Peoria’s oldest faith communities. It is located at 3000 W. Richwoods Blvd. in Peoria. Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religion that recognizes many sources of truth.

Candidate forum soon

PEORIA, IL -- From a news release: 

League of Women Voters of Greater Peoria Candidate Forum on September 17, 2020 at 6:00 p.m.

The League of Women Voters of Greater Peoria, in collaboration with the Fondulac District Library, is sponsoring a candidate forum for candidates running for election from the 46^th Illinois Senate District and the 91^st and 92^nd Illinois House Districts.   

The candidates expected to attend are. David Koehler (D) and Mary Buress (R ) running for the 46^th Illinois Senate; Mark Luft (R ) and Josh Grys (D) running for the 91^st Illinois House District; and Jehan Gordon-Booth (D) and Chad Grimm (L) running for the 92^nd Illinois House District.  Terry Bibo Knight will be the moderator.

This forum will be broadcast at 6 pm on Sept. 17 on Eastside Community Media and streamed live on the League of Women Voters of Greater Peoria Facebook page, facebook.com/LWVpeoria/

Additionally, it will be rebroadcast in its entirety at a future date on WCBU 89.9 FM Peoria Public Radio.

Because of COVID 19 restrictions the public will not be able to attend the event. But questions may be submitted in advance by emailing [email protected] or during the event on the League’s Facebook event page.
