Vote the Demo ticket

PEORIA, IL -- It's time to vote once again, with plenty of publicity/propaganda about the election.  Here are my picks, all Democrats:

Biden/Harris -- the only  rational choice.

Dick Durbin for the Senate.  He's smart, does a good job.

George Petrilli for Cong. in the 18th District, a smart,liberal lawyer.

Cheri Bustos for Cong. in the 17th DIstrict, now a leader in Congress, smart and capable.

In the Peoria County races:  just vote for the Democrats, all capable people versus unknowns.

Judges:  vote to retain Kilbride and McDade.  Kilbride's race has become competitive, as wealthy GOP donors are trying to unseat him by a a smear campaign linking him with House speaker Mike Madigan, who has not been charged with anything.

On the Heddington Oaks referendum, vote NO, to keep taxpayers from getting taken possibly by an insider deal to sell this property. Make the County Board do its job and reopen it as a vital safety net for residents.

On the graduated tax referendum vote YES, or all our taxes will go up to keep Illinois solvent.

The grace period to register and vote ends on Nov. 2 at early voting places. If you have moved you need to re-register. You can register and vote at your polling place or the Election office on Nov. 3.  You need an ID.

March to the Polls

PEORIA, IL -- From a news release:

"March to the Polls" will be the theme of a rally to encourage voting on Saturday, October 10, at 11:00 AM at the Gateway Building plaza, 200 NE Water Street, Peoria.  Cosponsored by a number of local organizations, the event will feature speakers, music and a dramatic performance.

 

Voter registration will be available.  

 

The keynote speaker will be arts educator Nikki Romain, cofounder of ART Inc in Peoria.  The local arts and science center offers educational experiences in a variety of formats. Other speakers and performers include a local physician and health advocate, representatives of women in Labor union leadership, LGBTQ, Climate, and racial advocacy groups, local musicians and a spoken word artist.   

 

    Masks and social distancing will be required.  The event will conclude about 12:15 PM.

Immigrants issues

PEORIA, IL -- From a press release, correxted:

When: Wednesday, October 7, at 1pm

Where: United States District Court Central District of Illinois

RLI insurance company, a billion dollar corporation located in Peoria, IL has put tens of thousands of immigrants & refugees at risk by causing a major data breach of migrant private information. The release of this information can be used against these people by the ICE, cartels, human trafficking, white supremacists & other fascists. Furthermore, RLI leadership has a history of anti-immigrant statements and insensitivity towards the dangers faced by migrants.

In response, organizations like Americans Resisting Minority & Ethnic Discrimination (ARMED) & Soy Libre came to Peoria in order to seek recompense from RLI. Instead of dialogue, activists were met with disdain, indifference, threats, and stalking by both RLI Insurance and Pinnacle Securities which is hired by RLI. Peoria States Attorney Judi Hoos & Sheriff Brian Asbell even stepped in to protect billionaires by arresting several peaceful protesters.

In response to these actions Organizers of Soy Libre, A.R.M.E.D., Peoria No Ban No Wall, and others will host a press conference announcing litigation against the Peoria County Sheriffs Office, RLI Insurance Company and Pinnacle Security that has been hired to intimidate and harass peaceful protestors. Join us Tuesday, October 6, at 1pm United States District Court Central District of Illinois in the heart of Downtown Peoria.

Come out and support black & brown protesters fighting against fascism and to protect immigrant rights. Come out and support the right of protesters to make their voices heard without corporate or government threats!

Solar lives!

PEORIA, IL - From a press release:

KEEPING SOLAR ALIVE IN CENTRAL ILLINOIS PRESS CONFERENCE

Date: Tuesday, October 6, 10AM

Location: Art Inc. 919 NE Jefferson Street, Peoria

Central Illinois Healthy Community Alliance is hosting an outdoor press conference to celebrate the installation of solar panels at Art Inc. and highlight new challenges projects like this are facing. Co-hosts include Illinois People’s Action and Sierra Club Heart of Illinois Group.

Speakers will include Jonathan Romain of Art Inc., solar contractor Kiersten Sheets, solar homeowner Kristin Jacobson Flex and Rev. Tony Pierce, local pastor, solar developer and community activist. Technical experts will be available to answer questions.

The Art Inc. solar panels were made possible by the competitive grant award coming out of the Edwards coal plant air pollution settlement process. It represents the type of project needed to build a clean energy economy accessible to all and with opportunities for all.

A strong Illinois-based solar industry will be critical for environmental and climate justice in the years ahead. Recent changes to the way Ameren credits solar owners for the surplus power they produce put projects like this in jeopardy.
