WASHINGTON, IL -- The Heartland Festival Orchestra's May 15 concert was for the birds -- with the program title "Blue Sky," performed at the Five Points auditorium.
Every classical piece involved birds or the sky, with the Grammy-nominated guest violin soloist appropriately named Tessa Lark.
The Kentucky native played a Grammy-nominated piece written for her, "Sky Concert for Violin and Orchestra" by Michael Torke. This modern classical number has echoes of country fiddling and jazz, and won Lark a standing ovation.
She then performed a folk tune, which she sang beautifully as she played the violin. This was her first performance with an orchestra in 18 months, she said.
An award-winning classical musician, she has the stunning good looks of a 'pop' or country-western singer with flashy fashion sense. Instead of a traditional gown, she wore a sleek pants suit with flower motif, very sexy.
The other pieces from the orchestra were Respighi's "The Birds," Ralph Vaughan Williams's "The Lark Ascending" for violin and orchestra, with Lark as the soloist, and "Postcards from the Sky," by Marjan Mozetic.
All the works were from modern composers and fit together well in a lush performance, well played.
The final concert of the season on July 24 will be quite different -- a Beatles tribute band backed by the HFO, playing Beatles hits.
